There are a number of things you need to consider when writing your CV. It is your opportunity to sell yourself as best you can and is often the first impression of a perspective employer. Below are a few handy tips to help improve your CV:
Layout – keep it simple and ensure that the most relevant information is placed at the top. Don’t take the attention away from the important parts of the CV by including too many fonts and borders as this will only detract from what the employer wants to know about you.
Good spelling/punctuation – Many employers have little patience for poor spelling and punctuation.
Always double check your CV and even ask somebody else to check for you to ensure there are no mistakes.
Cover Letter – most employers will expect a cover letter with your CV. It is your opportunity to portray some of your personality and really relate your skills and qualifications to the job that you are applying for. Make sure that you refer to some of the essential requirements of the job so that you can explain how you match them with your skills and experience. This is your chance to make your application personal to the job that you are applying for.
Employment History – Make sure you place your most recent employment first. Provide the most relevant skills and experience from each job that you have worked in and ensure that the dates are accurate. Depending on how long you have been working for will depend how many previous employers you state, however a minimum of two years would be recommended. Ensure that the most relevant jobs are detailed.
Education and Qualifications – Your educations and qualifications may not be directly related to the job you are applying for, but they are still important achievements that your employer will want to see. It identifies commitment to your development.
Skills and Strengths – Make sure that you emphasise your skills that are most relevant to the job you
are applying for, as well as ensuring that you state your strengths from previous, relevant employers.
Contact Details – Make sure that your contact details are up to date and always provide alternative methods of contact. The usual contact details to include are address, email address and at least one telephone number.
The interview process is not only an opportunity for the employer to find out more about you, but is also an opportunity for you to form an impression of where you could work and the type of person you may be working for. You therefore need to make sure that you are prepared, not only for the types of questions you may be asked, but also what you would like to find out from them. Below are some useful tips to help you through the interview process:
Research the Company and the position. This can normally be found on their website, however, if not, you may always ask them for information prior to the interview in order to help you prepare.
Identify and be familiar with the key competencies/skills for the role
Prepare good examples to highlight your skills and qualifications relevant to the role.
Be fully aware of the information that you have put on your CV so that you are in a strong position to answer any questions that they ask.
Consider what questions you may be asked and how you might best answer them.
Like many things, preparation is the key to success. Failing to prepare is preparing to fail.
Do not be late, but you also do not want to be too early. If you are more than 10 minutes early, ideally you should wait somewhere nearby until you are nearer the time of the interview.
Personal presentation is very important. Unless otherwise stated, you should dress in smart business wear.
Whilst the interview process can sometimes be a daunting experience, try not to get too nervous and ensure that you stay calm and answer the questions as specifically as possible. Do not go off on a tangent, but keep to the point.
Ensure that you have some questions to ask the interviewer at the end. This ensures that you also show an interest in wanting to know more about the company and the position.
